WEMEN

ART & DESIGN EXHIBITION

06/11/2018 – 31/03/19

“I’m a man who loved a woman created by a man”. That’s what René Gallimard says in the movie M. Butterfly Cronenberg, 1993). The illusion of the perfect woman generated by a man, because sometimes it is the opposite sex that can best represent the essence of feminine or masculine. Drag queens, drag kings, sex changes, transgenders, women managers acting as men, men who go to the beautician and shave (…girls who are boys who like boys to be girls who do boys like they’re girls… sang pop band Blur). Boundaries between genres have never been so explicitly fluid. They are all indicators of explorations and discoveries that involve the deepest areas of one’s being and emerge on the surface in the most diverse ways. The exhibition Wemen is an attempt to photograph the two genres, how they are defined and appear, by their own and in the relationship between them. It touches on the differences, be they real or residuals of a cultural heritage, but above all it investigates the growing awareness of their being closer to each other than we sometimes still think.
